Middleton Hall Retirement Village was recently the setting for a special ‘Lunching & Launching’ event held by charity Head Safe Football, marking the launch of its national petition calling for stronger protection against the risks associated with repetitive heading in football.
The campaign is calling for action to help protect current and future generations of footballers from sports-related brain disease. The petition is an important step in raising awareness and encouraging meaningful change within the game.
The event brought together former footballers, footballing families and campaigners, including the families of former Middlesbrough players and coaches Bill Gates, Willie Maddren, Hugh McIlmoyle, Gordon McQueen and Nobby Stiles, alongside Tina White, widow of former Middlesbrough coach Goff White. Former Middlesbrough, Manchester United and England defender Gary Pallister has also pledged his support.
The campaign has a particularly special connection to Middleton Hall, as Bill Gates was a former resident of the village. It was therefore incredibly poignant to welcome his family and others connected to the campaign to Middleton Hall and to play a small part in supporting this important cause.
