New Director of Hospitality joins Middleton Hall Retirement Village

Middleton Hall Retirement Village is delighted to announce the appointment of Adam Wardale as its new Director of Hospitality. Adam joined the team at the beginning of December 2024, bringing with him over 13 years of experience in the hospitality industry, most recently as the General Manager of the Grade-II listed Middletons Hotel in York.

During his time at Middletons Hotel Adam oversaw its transformation from a three-star boutique hotel to a four-star destination following significant investment. A Member of the Institute of Hospitality, latterly Adam was also the Chair of the York Hospitality Association where he championed the industry across the city, advocating for high standards and innovation.

In the summer of 2024 Adam was one of only four individuals in the UK to be awarded a scholarship to attend Cornell University’s prestigious hospitality programme, the only hospitality management course in the USA’s historic Ivy League.

“I wasn’t actively looking for a new role,” Adam explained, “but when I learned more about the position and the potential at Middleton Hall Retirement Village, it resonated deeply with me. The focus on community and people-centred values really stood out.”

It was during his first visit to Middleton Hall Retirement Village that Adam knew this would be the right move. “As soon as I drove up the entrance drive, I could see myself being part of this every day. The team was so welcoming, and the culture here immediately clicked. I could really see how my background and experience could make a positive impact.”

Adam brings a wealth of knowledge of hospitality, having started in the industry when he was 16 years old before embarking on a four-year degree in hospitality management. He began his career in earnest as a waiter when he was 22 subsequently working his way through the ranks.

He is also passionate about community engagement in business, having supported a programme in his previous role that employs women in prison as well as creating opportunities for people from challenging backgrounds. In 2022 he was awarded Unsung Hero by Visit England for his work in hospitality and the community.

“Business is about more than just making money—it’s also important to give back and make a difference where you can,” Adam said.

Looking ahead, Adam is excited about engaging with residents across Middleton Hall. “I’m keen to get feedback, hear people’s ideas, and work to elevate the experience here to an even higher level.”

Outside of work, Adam, his wife and their three children aged 10, 7, and 3 all enjoy time on the family’s two allotments where they grow as much as they can from scratch.

Middleton Hall Retirement Village Managing Director Suzanne Graham said: “We are looking forward to the fresh perspective and energy Adam will bring to this new role. With his exceptional experience and dedication to enhancing the experience for our residents and visitors, the future of hospitality at Middleton Hall is in excellent hands.”
