Local produce on sale in The Orangery

Middleton Hall Retirement Village is delighted to stock a variety of local produce in The Orangery shop, including eggs fresh from the Middleton Hall estate hens.

As Clare Robson, Hospitality Manager explains, sustainability is one of the core values of our retirement village: “We pride ourselves on looking after our environment and community and stocking local produce for The Orangery reduces food miles as well as lowering our carbon footprint.”

Handmade sweets from Beamish Museum

The jars of sweets from Beamish Museum are handmade in the traditional way in the museum’s 1900s town sweet shop. As Beamish is a charity, purchasing these sweets directly helps to support its work preserving the North East’s traditions and past for future generations to enjoy. Each delivery is also made by a member of the Beamish team in period costume.

Canny Candy Gadgies

Canny Candy Gadgies hail from the Heritage Coast in the North East. The company has been family run since 1902 when Jane Dodds married Albert Baimbridge and, using her mother’s traditional recipes, made fudge for her friends and family in her kitchen. Now run by the third generation of the family, the company continues to make handmade products that are free from palm oil, GMOs and gluten as well as containing no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives.

Acorn Dairy

Another of our suppliers that is a family run business is Acorn Dairy which is based in a low-carbon, organic farm in Archdeacon Newton, eight miles from Middleton Hall Retirement Village. Recently named the ‘Best Dairy Butter’ option in the UK by Ethical Consumer Magazine, last year the business won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise for sustainable development. We stock both the award-winning butter and glass bottles of milk which are used across the village.

Weardale cheese

As far as unusual work places go Weardale Cheese tops the list by being based in one of the old workshops at Harperley Prisoner of War Camp in Crook. Here they produce a range of hard and soft artisan cheeses including the Weardale, a hard white Dales type cheese, that is available in The Orangery shop.
