Middleton Hall welcomed Carolyn Corfield to unveil 3 ceramic pieces which are going to feature in the new ceramic garden. Residents, directors and Co-owners were invited to be a part of the unveiling, where there was much anticipation! See below a gallery of how the showing went.
The pieces are described as being Geo-Sapiens- a trio of groyne like figurative pieces in glazed stoneware which represent the passage of time from youth to old age.
Carolyn’s work first came to public notice whilst a figurative artist living on the Channel Islands. On returning to England she further developed her sculptural interest in tandem with a career in the education sector.
As a mixed media sculptor now based in Darlington, Carolyn works on commissions and exhibition pieces for municipal and private galleries throughout the UK, with her work featuring in collections worldwide. Her unique figurative sculptures in porcelain and stoneware on occasion incorporate glass or metal and often imply a narrative. She also produces film installations whereby both sculpture and spectators alike are ‘clothed’ in moving image
Of late, especially for events in several museums and cathedrals, Carolyn’s work has become linked to the history of a venue…Currently she is developing a series of glass torsi alluding to the medieval glassmakers in Jarrow for an exhibition at Jarrow Hall in 2023.
A new departure in her practice was a ‘Guardian Angel’ series of posters, created via the digital manipulation of her sculptural images. This evolved due to a postcard initiative and for several online events which replaced disrupted exhibitions in 2020/21.
Carolyn was thanked with a gift from Middleton Hall for donating such amazing pieces to the ceramic garden, where they will be appreciated by all who visit.
