Sunshine and flowers for Middleton Hall Retirement Village’s National Garden Open Scheme

Visitors enjoyed a sunny stroll through the award-winning grounds of Middleton Hall Retirement Village at the weekend and helped to raise funds for charity.

The retirement community at Middleton St George near Darlington had extended an invitation to explore its extensive private grounds as part of the annual National Garden Scheme which raises money for nursing and health charities.

A total of 133 visitors took advantage of the rare opportunity to delve into the 45-acre estate and explore the gardens and woodlands which really come into their own in the summer months.

They were able to enjoy a mix of traditional formal gardens, an area dedicated to Japanese planting, a butterfly garden, a newly opened garden with artworks made by the Middleton Hall Ceramics group and a newly established fernery garden, as well as a vibrant collection of community allotments tended by village residents.

A choice of walks through the estate’s extensive woodland were also available as well as the chance to enjoy a cup of tea, slice of cake and home-made scones.

Estates Manager Andrew Gatiss said the Estates team had worked hard to make sure there was a good show on offer for visitors and the support of volunteers from the village’s independent retirement properties had helped the day go really smoothly.

“We were delighted to welcome so many visitors. The sun shone, the gardens looked glorious and we raised money for some great causes so we are all very happy.”
