Health & Wellbeing Centre member celebrates life-changing transformation

A member of Middleton Hall Retirement Village’s Health & Wellbeing Centre is celebrating an extraordinary weight loss and fitness transformation that has not only reshaped his body but dramatically improved his health and quality of life.

Lee, 46, from Middleton St George, has lost an incredible 11.2 stone (157 lbs) over the past 18 months, reducing his weight from 25 stone (350 lbs) to 13.8 stone (193 lbs) through determination, lifestyle changes and consistent use of the Health & Wellbeing Centre swimming pool and gym facilities.

Lee’s transformation began following a serious health wake-up call.

“I was suffering ill health and went to the GP, where I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and a blood sugar level of 85,” said Lee. “I knew if I didn’t do something, I could have a stroke or heart attack. I was also tired of not being able to wear the clothes I wanted or do things with my kids, like going to amusement parks or playing in the park.”

Determined to take control, Lee started with swimming, initially completing 20 lengths and gradually building up to 50. As his fitness and confidence improved, he approached the Health & Wellbeing Centre team for a personalised gym programme.

“That’s when I began rowing, running and cycling,” he explained. “At one point I was training six days a week, though I’ve now reduced that to four. The progression has been steady and manageable.”

Lee took part in the 125-mile exercise bike challenge as part of Middleton Hall’s 125th anniversary in April 2025

Alongside exercise, Lee adopted a healthy, balanced diet, including plenty of vegetables, lean proteins and fresh fruit.

“I reduced portion sizes and stopped snacking on crisps, chocolate and biscuits,” he said. “It sounds boring, but you soon adapt and feel much better for it.”

The results have been life-changing. Lee has dropped from a 46-inch waist to a 32-inch waist, requiring several wardrobe changes along the way.

“I feel great in myself,” he said. “Changing clothes sizes is never a hindrance when you’re getting smaller.”

Friends and family have been amazed by his progress.

“People I haven’t seen for a long time don’t even recognise me,” Lee laughed. “One lady actually refused to answer the door until I convinced her who I was!”

Lee credits much of his success to the encouragement and support he has received at Middleton Hall’s Health & Wellbeing Centre.

“The team are great – super supportive and always happy to help,” he said. “The facilities are excellent and the other members have also been incredibly supportive throughout my experience.”

Middleton Hall Retirement Village’s Health & Wellbeing Manager, Michael Hodgson, praised Lee’s achievement and dedication: “Lee’s transformation is an outstanding example of what can be achieved with consistency, support and the right environment,” he said. “His commitment and determination have been inspiring to both our team and fellow members, and we are very proud to have supported him through his progress.”

The Health & Wellbeing Centre at Middleton Hall Retirement Village offers modern gym and swimming facilities, expert guidance and a welcoming community atmosphere. Lee is one of the non-resident members who have access to the Centre, reflecting Middleton Hall’s commitment to supporting health and wellbeing within the wider community.

Now focused on maintaining his achievements, Lee hopes his story will inspire others who may feel daunted about starting their own fitness goals.

“Taking the first step is the hardest, physically and mentally,” he said. “It doesn’t matter your size or fitness level, if you’re in the gym, you’re trying to improve, and you should be proud of that. Set small, achievable goals and monitor your progress. My first goal was to get to 20 stone, and at the time it felt impossible.” He added: “There’s no quick fix and results aren’t immediate, so enjoy the process. Every small change you make is a step closer to your goal.”
